UK to Launch Drone Engineering Degree for Future Military Specialists

2026-01-27

The initiative aims to equip students with specialized skills for evolving defense requirements, establishing quicker routes into positions related to uncrewed systems, autonomy, and other technologies vital to contemporary military operations. Students will progress through the program at a faster pace compared to traditional engineering degrees, allowing them to enter defense technology careers sooner. Applications for interested students are currently being accepted for the September 2026 intake.

As per the UK government, this course is a response to the insights gained from the conflict in Ukraine, addressing the increasing risks posed by uncrewed systems and enhancing London’s capability to identify, deter, and counter drone threats over military installations.

This new degree program is being introduced as the UK amplifies its emphasis on unmanned technologies, both for use in combat scenarios and for counter-drone defense measures. In November of the previous year, the British Army evaluated Chinese-manufactured 3D printers during drills in Kenya to create tactical unmanned systems on-site.
